there are three grounds for an appeal this year an appeal against an academic judgment an appeal on the grounds of discrimination and an appeal against an unresolved administrative error

jill stewart our director of qualifications development explains what it means to make an appeal on the grounds of discrimination sqa will only be able to progress and appeal for discrimination under the following conditions

firstly if there has been a breach of the equality act of 2010 which must have either been acknowledged by your school college or training provider or established by an appropriate authority

or if your school college or training provider did not provide for you the agreed assessment arrangements for one or more of your assessments the equality act 2010 protects people from discrimination based on age disability race religion or belief monitor status and pregnancy of the eternity gender reassignment sex or sexual orientation

if you believe you faced discrimination which led to you receiving a result that did not reflect your knowledge and abilities you should discuss this with your schooling college or training provider sqe cannot investigate a claim of discrimination at your school college or training provider and decide whether it’s occurred or not

what sqa can do is to ensure that you are certificated fairly so any claim of discrimination must be a settled matter before you can appeal on this ground you can also appeal if you believe you never received the assessment arrangement agreed by your teacher or lecturer for example you did not receive added time to complete your assessments

or receive easy-to-read materials despite these arrangements being agreed with your school college or training provider in advance if you believe that a negate assessment arrangement was not in place you should discuss this with your school college or training provider for all appeals you will need to have a conversation with your teacher

or lecturer and hear their professional view as to whether an appeal is in your best interests you may wish to have someone you trust have this conversation with you or for you but the final decision on whether or not to appeal is yours you can register until thursday the 12th of august if you have a conditional offer at university or college
